How to Run in Indian Summer Heat & Monsoon: Hydration & Route Safety
Survive extreme temperatures, high humidity, waterlogged roads, and slippery trails while keeping your training streak alive.
01Beating the 40°C+ Summer Heat
Adjust your training schedule to start before 6:00 AM or after sunset. Heat increases cardiovascular strain—your heart rate will be 10-15 beats higher at the same pace. Adjust your expectations: run by effort and heart rate rather than raw GPS pace.
02Monsoon Running Gear & Footwear Care
During the rainy season, wear synthetic anti-blister socks (never cotton, which retains water and causes chafing). Choose shoes with rubberized outsoles featuring deep lugs for wet asphalt and trail grip. After a rainy run, stuff shoes with newspaper to dry them quickly and prevent fungus.
03Route Selection & Traffic Awareness
Avoid low-lying roads with open drains, potholes, or heavy flyover construction during the monsoon. Choose well-lit loop courses in municipal parks, university campuses, or gated residential townships where footing is predictable.
04Pre-Hydration Protocol
Start hydrating 24 hours before your key long run. Drink 500ml of water with a pinch of pink salt when you wake up, and carry a 500ml soft flask with electrolytes even for 5K–10K distances during peak humid months (July–September).
